WIP: Video installation: “Black Swan – The Question of Continuing.”
Multi channel work with material from: Sweden, Mexico, Japan, Spain.

As you review the works you can see a shift in focus around 2020 prior to that  relate to the tradition of time based art and have a special interest for the transgression between private and public and how art can be a critical tool to revel the tension and/or covert layers in society. The multidisciplinary structure of photography, video, sound and text are used for installations or interventions towards a transformative methodology located in the in-between spaces of art, activism and academic research converging the role of the artist and the curator. The research oriented method situates a select group, which then intervene in a process to dismantle covert topics in social or political contingencies or historic events. The works are often presented in spatial installations interlocked with seminars or workshops. The collaborate process is an important part of my practice.

Where as I in ongoing work is leaning more towards new materialism. “My artistic and curatorial practice investigates the relational conditions through which presence, subjectivity, and community are constituted. Engaging with situated communities, the work responds to the social and political contingencies of the public sphere while exploring lens-based and embodied practices as modes of relational inquiry. Drawing on an ethics of reverence, care, and attunement, I examine processes of co-becoming through which bodies, images, technologies, and environments are mutually implicated. My projects seek to create conditions for encounter rather than representation, attending to the ways meaning, agency, and belonging emerge through entangled relations. In doing so, the work addresses existential questions not as individual concerns alone, but as collective and ecological processes of living together.

TYPOLOGIES OF SILENCE (2014) is a work on abstract domestic spheres located in public space. It is set on the boundaries of private and public and explores how this divide connotes migration and addresses an immanent discourses of xenophobia and nationalism. It is a continuation of investigations of contested territories/spheres between public and private, narrative and documentary, the watcher and the watched Hallberg has worked with for more than a decade.

The first sequence TYPOLOGIES OF SILENCE- Out posts, is a series of six works (7 photographs) it touches up on domestic spheres in Oakland (US, 2009), Tver (Russia, 2013) and Stockholm (Sweden, 2014)

The photographic series Typologies of Silence – Outpost explores the domestic: the home in its abstraction. Situated at the threshold between the private and the public, the work examines the gaps between these realms, bringing into focus issues of migration, subletting and shared housing, as well as the unspoken discourses surrounding xenophobia and nationalism. The series continues an inquiry that has engaged Hallberg for more than a decade: making visible and critically examining the ambivalence between the private and the public, the narrative and the documentary, and the observer and the observed.

We formed a micro institution to produce and tour the work. Select photographs were sold in special edition to help with the funding. We had grants/funding from Swedish Institute, Pro Suecia Foundation etc

As we toured the work we brought prints and open frame monitors. Local lgbtq+ community had to be willing to engage

State of Mind was made under special circumstances we committed to never share the installation material online with the conversations.

Making the Immortal

Artists: Anna Viola Hallberg and Bjorn Perborg together with Bror Kronstrand.

Installation view Making the Immortal 30 photographs (12 of them double sided flip-frames), 4 carousel slideshow sculptures, one projection sculpture, 2 prints as text based works and one essay film (9 min).

What are the conditions for an artist in todays art scene is reflected up on via the late artist Mr Bror Kronstrand (SE) 1875-1950). The entire film is made by private stills an photographs left behind by the now forgotten portrait artist. During his time he was a successful art entrepreneur but perhaps the approach made him less remembered in our time. The essay film follows some of the adventures of Kronstrand as well as portrays him as an artist seen via contemporary questions of the art market.

The project explores humanity’s vain pursuit of immortality through remembrance—the desire to be remembered. Drawing on the archived photographs, film footage, letters, and documents of the now-forgotten painter Bror Kronstrand (1875–1950), Hallberg and Perborg question the mechanisms of canonization, the writing of history, and the construction of myth. At the heart of the exhibition lies the paradox that Kronstrand was quickly forgotten despite all his efforts to gain recognition and secure his legacy. The exhibition also touches on issues of copyright, the boundary between the private and the public, and contemporary cultural policy’s tendency to define the artist primarily as an entrepreneur.

The exhibition should be understood as an installation, although the individual works retain their autonomy. The collaboration between the three was the effect of discovery of a Bror Kronstrand collection the local library and museum in Mariestad. During the summer of 2011 research began and in 2013 Hallberg and Perborg went to a medium to reach out to Bror Kronstrand in order to add his aesthetics and bizarre humor to the work.

Thee installation was shown in full in Gothenburg. The artists arranged a pink limousine to bring people from Mariestad to see the exhibition at Konstepedemin (Former Epidemic hospital) The film premiered at Gothenburg International Film Festival (GIFF).
Photos and films left behind by the now forgotten portrait artist Bror Kronstrand form the basis for a rumination on how posterity will remember us, and about the conditions of the artist then and now. Entertaining, well done and thought-provoking Sara Wadell, GIFF

Making the Immortal is part of a project on a Swedish painter: Bror Kronstrand (1875-1950). He was a portrait painter and globetrotter. The installation is based upon Kronstrand’s private photographs, documents, and 16 and 35 mm film that have been found in the archives. The work also generated the essay film En handelsresande i evigt liv (Eng. title: Making the Immortal), highlighting aspects of the public interest for Kronstrand and his own approach to celebrity. This is set within the context with contemporary production conditions for artists and policies of the state cultural agenda. Prior to starting with the esay film Hallberg and Perborg facillitated a pshycic to get in contact with Kronstrand. The research on Kronstrand was initiated in 2011 during a visit to Mariestad, the birth town of the deceased artist.
