THE UNFOLD IS A SERIES OF WALKING SCORES was initiated as a relay of walking scores in 2025 and is carried out in 2025. A score is made by an artist and performed/lead by another. They are made for public participation. The performing artist then does the score and makes yet another one that is passed on. The aim is to make 10 new scores in the format of a relay.

#2 THE TREES ARE SANCTUARIES
A WALKING SCORE FOR A FOREST, by Rebekah Dean
TREES ARE SANCTUARIES is a walking score imagined out of the quote written by the German-Swiss Artist Hermann Hesse, who was born in a region near the Black Forest. The score explores the idea that we all know how to communicate with trees…
“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.”
Wandering: Notes and sketches, by Hermann Hesse, published 1920
See score for full instructions.
Rebekah Dean is a cross-disciplinary artist; curator, living and working in North London, she uses walking as an activity for sustaining creative practice >>>

Score orinally made for the Sculpture Trail at Stephens House and Gardens, 17 East End Road, N3 3QE London, United Kingdom.
The video was made at the Orange Gardens in Rome Italy as a compliment to the instructions. The set up in the orange gardes across the street where the artists had their accomodation (Circolo Scandinavio), have a number of stone podiums providing for the artists not to do the score infront of sculptures but rather becoming sculptures and doing the gestures of the score.
