About John Schuerman
WAP24 June Edition Lead walker and co-curator John Schuerman is an environmental artist and independent curator. His artwork reflects his deep interest in nature both human and nonhuman. His aesthetic style and social consciousness formed as he grew up on a dairy farm in southern Wisconsin. His primary art practices are Walking and Drawing, which he uses to examine his community’s physical and psychic landscapes. As a curator he’s produced over 30 exhibitions across the Midwest on topics that address current concerns in our collective psyche.

In May and June 2024, John Schuerman co-curated Walking As Practice 2024 (WAP24), an artist residency focused on walking-based art in Björkö, Sweden. Anna Viola Hallberg and Ami Skånberg initiated and cocurated WAP24 as part of the Björkö Konstnod residency program. Schuerman, Hallberg, and Skånberg worked closely to facilitate and guide group projects, create space for individual artists to produce new walking work, and facilitate regular ‘share sessions’ to learn from and inspire one another.

Schuerman will present the walking art projects created and completed during WAP24. The projects are wide-ranging, delving into global and personal domains, but all are connected to place: Björkö’s lush forests and rocky shores along the Baltic Sea. These walking-art projects provide a unique view into the Swedish landscape, collective action, and our time’s environmental and social concerns.
